| FU2: Word to Big Bird.
I’ve known this gentle giant for quite a few years now, and as
such, I’m proud to introduce to our readers to a good friend of
mine: Mateo. What’s up Matty? |
DJ
Matéo: Whuddup!
|
| FU2: Let’s kick it off
from the beginning. How and why did you get into the world of
spinning records? |
DJ
Matéo: I used to hit up local
raves in Vancouver. At the time I was a bit of an introvert so
rather than dance I was left to watch and listen. It wasn't long
after that I started collecting breakbeats.
|
FU2:
What made you make the switch between playing breaks/house to what
you play now which I understand could be anything from hip hop to
dubstep?
|
DJ
Matéo: I think I matured a bit. I
felt I couldn’t relate to breaks anymore. I couldn't relate to
raves. I got tired of playing records that were catered to 15 year
olds. The people I hung out with started appreciating a wider
variety of music as well, which definitely had an influence on
me.
|
FU2: What would you say
was the biggest difference between the two scenes?
|
DJ Matéo: One is fueled by Ecstasy
the other by Alcohol. One is meant to be 19+ the other is “I hope
my mom doesn't find out i'm here!”
|
FU2:
Who and what has influenced you along the way?
|
DJ
Matéo: It's everyday that I hear
something new and exciting. That influences me the most. When
you're tired of a certain sound theres always another one to
replace it. Internationally, djs and producers like Dave Tipper,
Diplo, Z-Trip, Clinton Sparks. These guys are always pushing new
shit. Theres a ton of local djs and producers who are doing there
thing; Flipout is a legend in these parts and can hold it down in
any kind of environment , Neoteric has to be the most motivated
dude I have ever met, I wish more people made music like U-Tern his
shit is crazy! To be honest the local inspiration really outweighs
what ever is going on internationally, for me at least.
|
FU2:
The job of a DJ is often complicated. How do find playing music for
yourself as opposed to trying to please the crowd?
|
DJ
Matéo: Well that's the great
thing about music today. With tools such as blogs, internet radio,
facebook, artists are able to reach a larger group of listeners
then ever before. More people are out there downloading shit and
opening up to new sounds. This definitely makes it easier for djs
to play what they want. Its so easy to break a new track out these
days because chances are the audience was listening to it the night
before on their iPod.
|
FU2:
Since I’ve known you, you’ve played many a sets tagging it up with
other DJ’s. Do you prefer to play with another DJ or by
yourself?
|
DJ
Matéo: I dig both. When you're on
your own the dj set really reflects your style, your programming
ability, your dedication. On the other end djing with a group of
friends is always a party and who doesn't like a party!
|
FU2:
What would you pass on to the up’n’comers?
|
DJ
Matéo: Be creative! Play what YOU
like!
|
FU2:
Any final words?
|
DJ Matéo: Thank you to all the
people who have supported me for the last 7 years! Big ups to Pedro
and Shaun and the soulgood fam for their support!
