Jay
Kin
Album- On
the Humble
Artist
Profile:
From a scene that’s often
underestimated at times, new artist Jay Kin (Vancouver) brings
soulful and raw lyrics to the table. Rapping since he was twelve,
Jay Kin spent his earlier years listening to music from such
artists as The Gap Band, Parliament, Teddy Pendergrass, Grand
master Flash, LL cool J, Michael Jackson just to name a few. Such
artists had soon sparked a deep interest for Jay Kin towards music.
He soon found a passion for writing lyrics when he hit his early
teen years and later was introduced to the local hip hop scene at
the age of 16 along with his crew, POS. He’s been heavily involved
in it since, and has never looked back.
At 18, he finally took his love for music to the stage, which gave
him no other choice but to pursue a career in music. Before he
could even grasp everything in, he was soon opening for large acts
such as Raekwon, Common, Juelz Santana, Lupe Fiasco, Mobb Deep,
Talib Kweli, Devin the Dude, 2 Live Crew and Souls of Mischief.
Now 23 and being called one of Vancity's Best artists, he
has released several cd's..."The Vintage Mixtape", "Show Time the
Rebuttal", "Year of the Flow", and his latest release, "No Time To
Waste". With several vinyl records pressed and released, a prize
that was won from "The Song clash" contest through Grow-Op Records,
he has steady gained a buzz in and outside of Vancouver. With an
amazing flow, influenced from what is known as the 'golden era',
Jay Kin plans to take his music to bigger heights with truthful
lyrics, hard hitting production, and a focused mind towards working
hard and accomplishing his goals. Nothing fabricated or copied; he
continues to make strong music with big plans for his future album
entitled "Kinfolk". His overall aim is not to be labeled as
just another artist but to be a progressing artist in a humble but
yet confident manner. With a unique style, strong delivery and a
message (but yet very entertaining), Jay Kin's love for music is
his drive and passion. He is determined and focused to break
through on a major scale in the music industry. Ladies and
gentlemen! This is an artist you do not want to miss out
on...

Jay Kin
Interview:
FU2: What’s good Jay; Let us
know a little bit about you (where you from etc.)?
Jay Kin: I’ve been keeping
myself in the public eye by getting a few interviews, on the
internet, and in magazines (THICK). I was born and raised here in
Vancouver.
FU2: So how long have you been
in game?
Jay Kin: Um, been doing it
for 5 years, I say that a lot in each interview, however I really
don’t think I’ve got myself in the game yet (on the humble). Right
now I’m just getting on my grind and working hard to really get
myself there. But I have been on the scene for about 5
years.
FU2: Speak about your past solo
and group projects?
Jay Kin: My first project was
underground; it was called “Showtime the Rebuttal.” It was Webmatic
and myself; we didn’t really get that project out there. My first
solo project was called the “Vintage Mixtape.” The next project was
“Year of the Flow,” with Edge1. After that was “No Time to
Waste.”
FU2: What do you feel has been
your biggest obstacle and how did you overcome it?
Jay Kin: My biggest obstacle
would be trying to connect myself to my audience and establishing
that connection. The other biggest obstacle is myself because of
having to push myself hard to avoid slackin off, staying motivated,
and remaining focused.
Lets talk
about your music.
FU2:You’ve been in this game
for more than a minute; how you have remained true to yourself
without succumbing to commercial trends for album sales?
Jay Kin: Being in a place
like Vancouver I don’t have to worry about pleasing anyone because
the people here don’t just listen to what’s hot. They listen to
everything from the present to the oldies and I think it’s really
cool that people here listen to what they want. I stick to what I
do because I know Vancouver has that love for good music overall
and not trendy music.
FU2: As a fan of your music I
have noticed that your tracks are complete, meaning they aren’t
only hook based. Can you explain your process in creating a track
from concept to production?
Jay Kin: Ah, really I start
with a beat then if it feels right I drop the magic. I focus on the
direction of the track and then I get competitive.
FU2: I’ve also noticed that
some of your tracks refer to Christ and your belief in faith. Can
you explain how faith has influenced your music?
Jay Kin: Man that has so much
to do with everything. That’s why I believe that I have been really
blessed with the opportunity to perform at various venues. I
haven’t really gotten my exposure but just to be here I feel that
by getting the recognition I have been getting lately is really big
(on the humble). My faith is what keeps me humble and it reminds me
of what I have to do to get where I need to get. When you’re not
humble you lose focus. If you’re too busy with your head in the
clouds you lose focus, therefore my faith keeps me in the right
direction. My faith relates to everything I do on and off
stage.
What’s
Next?
FU2:So what can we expect from
you as a solo artist and as a group artist in the
future?
Jay Kin: Next I got a really
blazin cd, not really an album but it’s called “On the Humble.”
It’s gonna be mainly my own songs with a few guest appearances.
Expect it to drop this summer. Following this cd is going to be the
official “Kinfolk Album,” which I have been talking about for about
a year and a half.
FU2:Do you have any preference
regarding being in a group or being solo? (And if so
why?)
Jay Kin: Honestly I enjoy the
solo projects. It can sometimes be tough doing group projects. With
group projects you get the obvious barriers like, creative
differences and the vibe has to be right collectively.
FU2:What’s your strategy for
longevity?
Jay Kin: The strategy for
longevity is to strive to achieve everything like it’s your last
(on the humble). The key is to remain humble and just shutting
everything down, any opportunity you get. Knowing that I can always
improve is also important and not thinking that I’m on top of my
game. Don’t get caught up in the attention, stay humble.
FU2: At the end of the day what
message do you want your fans to get from your music?
Jay Kin: I just want everyone
to know that my intention when making music is to do it right. I
hope to spread some knowledge and entertain at the same time. I
want to make sure the people get good music and not something to
just shove down their ears.
FU2: Where can
people pick up a Jay Kin album?
Jay Kin: I have a number of
locations starting off with Dipt, Beatstreet records, Ephin Apparel
store, Soul 2 Soul, Eastside Urban Wear, and myself (doin it hand
to hand).
